The Mormon religion has had issues with radicals (just any other religion does) and Hopkins is taking time to address that. Her goal is to open our eyes to things we would rather not see. Hopkins likes to show the underbelly to the world we live in. Pattyn’s family is Mormon and her father’s abusive behavior is overlooked by her the pastor due do ‘a man’s right to his property (aka family).’ I am going to stand up for Hopkins and say that she never once said this was the norm for Mormon families or religious leaders, she never once said this is something everyone in the religion deals with. There is a main plot point to this book that people are bitter about that I just want to address it quickly. Hopkins is so fluent when it comes to taking social taboo’s and throwing them in our face. Honestly Hopkins will gut you in the best possible way. This book will leave you feeling dirty and raw. If you are reading this book thinking you’re going to get a ‘happily ever after’ you have never read Hopkins. This is where she meets Ethan a boy who shows her how special and how cherished she is. ‘ Due to un-saintly behavior Pattyn is sent for the summer to her Aunt’s house where she learns about love, acceptance and humanity. Her father shows more love to the bottle then her family, only laying with his wife for a chance to breed a son. I am happy that I got the chance to reread this book because it is by far one of my favorite work’s of Hopkins.īurned follows Pattyn who is a Mormon girl struggling with religion, family, and romance. I am a very rare re-reader only because my list of book to read is well over 500 (I kid you not check out my Goodreads). I read this book originally back in high school. Genre: Contemporary, Young Adult, Religion, Poetry/Prose, AbuseĮllen Hopkins is basically a literary god who deserves all the praise she is given.
